Mother Mitravinda critically ill By Yamuna devi dasi
Dear devotees,
Mitravinda dd (Maria Zaldivar), a beloved pillar of the
Alachua community, is currently in the ICU of Shands Hospital at the
University of Florida in Gainesville.
Our community was shocked and deeply saddened when she
was recently diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer, which had already metastasized
significantly. Her doctors have told her that chemotherapy is no longer an option
at this point. While so many of us were just beginning to digest this news and the
prognosis that Mother Mitravinda may have only four to six months more to
live, she faced another predicament: an emergency surgery to remove blockages in
her upper and lower intestines. About a week ago she had experienced
excruciating abdominal pain and Mother Akuti spent the night with her. After a long day
in the emergency room the next day she was admitted. She made it through the
surgery, but now has an infection to deal with. Mind you, this surgery was not meant to
prolong her life or treat the cancer, but only to solve the abdominal pains and allow
her to eat again.
Mitravinda has served as a pujari at New Ramanreti since
the late 80s. For all these years she has dressed the Deities gorgeously and would
daily bring Srila Prabhupada a garland of fresh flowers from her garden. Her loving,
jovial demeanor brightened so many lives every day. She had been through a rough
time in the past couple of years, after her husband left her, yet still kept her
spirits up despite these personal problems. She has been sincerely serving her
spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, since the day she got initiated.
Mitravinda is in need of the most valuable gift; that of
the vaishnava’s prayers for her spiritual wellbeing. Her children, Samba,
Raghunath, and Nandini, are in need of more than just your prayers, though. They are in
dire need of financial assistance. Each of them has a family with young
children to raise and support. If you have been blessed with good financial means in this
lifetime, we beg you to kindly donate towards Mitravinda’s medical emergency.
Her sons are so devastated that they are barely able to work right now. Her
daughter lives with her husband and two children in Australia and desperately wants to come
see her mother before Krishna calls her home, but needs help with these
expenses as well.
